Taking care of your mates at work: Advanced Buildings gets behind the R U OK? campaign
The R U OK? campaign is based on the idea that ‘a conversation could change a life.’
It’s all about helping to raise awareness of mental health. It aims to equip us all to help people we know who suffer from anxiety and feelings of isolation. By reaching out, it’s hoped that the incidence of self-harm and suicide can be prevented.
This year, National RUOK? Day is Thursday 13 September 2018.
“At Advanced Buildings, we are committed to creating a culture where people feel confident about sharing their ups and downs,” said Michelle Tuite, National Human Resources Manager.
“Let’s face it, we all have our bad days. 80% of our employees are men and the reality is that many men don’t always feel comfortable talking about personal issues, even to their mates.”
“The R U OK? website has a great guide on how people can approach their work colleagues sensitively, without giving the impression that they’re ‘being nosey’.”
The R U OK? website offers ‘simple steps to talk to a staff member who’s not ok’ including:
Getting ready to ask
- Be ready
- Be prepared
- Pick your moment
Starting a conversation
- Ask R U OK?
- Encourage action
The Advanced Buildings team will be holding a BBQ – with a gold coin donation – to help raise funds for the RUOK? campaign.
