Staff Profile: Adam Bennett
Adam Bennett works as an Estimator and Trade Supervisor at Advanced Buildings’ Coffs Harbour office on the NSW coast.
Adam has worked in the building industry for over 16 years. He ran his own building business for 10 of those years. He’s a qualified carpenter/builder and holds a current Builder’s Licence.
Adam has been involved with insurance-related assessing, quoting and repairs for over five years as both an employee and contractor. He gained valuable estimating experience working for a project-home builder who focused on new builds.
We asked Adam to tell us about his role, his challenges and his interests, and why he loves working at Advanced Buildings.
What’s your current role and what are your responsibilities?
My job involves meeting home-owners, tenants or business-owners on site to discuss, inspect and quote on their insurance-related damages.
I liaise with loss adjusters, assessors and insurers, creating documentation with photos and reports upon completion of every inspection.
I generate quotes and variations on active projects, plus I arrange makesafes on request.
We run authorised repairs between Port Macquarie and Coffs Harbour, so the job involves supervising a team of tradespeople across that area. As well as engaging and negotiating with trades, I help manage WHS compliance and control budgets.
Liaising with professionals outside the organisation including local authorities, specialist building professionals, consultants and suppliers, is also part of a ‘day’s work’.
What’s one of the biggest challenges you face in your job?
It’s always a challenge to find skilled, reliable local trades in my regional area.
We maintain high standards of workmanship. So, any trades we take on, whether they’re builders, painters or tilers, need to meet our compliance criteria.
Describe the most interesting project you’ve worked on since you’ve been part of the Advanced Buildings team.
The most interesting jobs I’ve worked on include our involvement in securing several fire rebuilds.
I really enjoy the building process, both the technical aspects of the repairs, and seeing the owner’s excitement when their properties are restored to their former glory.
What one accomplishment are you most proud of?
I’ve worked hard to assemble our local trades base in the various regional centres. I like to use local people and regional people like to know that locals are getting the work too.
Since I started at Advanced Buildings, I've brought in a lot of new trades. I guess this is the benefit of having worked in this region and in this industry for many years.
What’s the one thing that you think Advanced Buildings does differently from other companies?
They really care about doing things properly especially in relation to safety and compliance matters. And they’re committed to being transparent in the way we operate.
It can be challenging sometimes, but we know that keeping our clients satisfied by operating professionally and with integrity is important for our reputation and growth in the long-term.
How would people describe you?
I think people might say that I’m approachable and easy to deal with - and that I like to have a laugh.
What’s on your bucket list (in general)?
Spending quality time with my wife and three kids is up there. I would also love to go on a long-range motorcycle trek to remote parts of our country, including sleeping rough under the stars.
What do you like doing when you’re not at work?
When I’m not at work, I go surfing, riding my motorbike and camping with the family and friends.
