Staff Profile: Dominic Powell
Estimating the cost of damage, especially after a natural disaster, is always a challenge.
For Dominic Powell, Major Loss Estimator for Advanced Buildings in Queensland, it’s just part of the job.
Dominic’s role gives him the opportunity to utilise his commercial and building skills, mastered through his supervision of large projects. It also allows him to apply his knowledge of building principles, codes and standards, learnt through his studies.
He has a background in supervising building and construction works, particularly civil projects. Dominic has also completed a Diploma in Building and Construction and has worked as an Estimator for Advanced Buildings for nearly 2 years.
As part of the Major Loss Department, Dominic helped to streamline the quoting process of Major Loss jobs. This has significantly improved project estimates, enabling his team to better respond to the needs of clients.
‘Our aim is to create cost-effective proposals which create value for both our clients and Advanced Buildings’
Dominic enjoys the technical and complex nature of remediation works projects despite the long lead times between quoting and getting on with the actual project.
When asked what he thinks Advanced Buildings does differently from other building and construction companies, Dominic explained, “We develop close relationships with our clients. We try and gain a deeper understanding of their requirements so we can provide the best service possible.”
Beyond work, Dominic is keen to travel to ‘every continent’. “I have visited five continents to date and would still like to return to all of them to see more. I want to see many more interesting and amazing things – I have The Seychelles, Machu Picchu and the Galapagos Islands in mind for future trips.”
Dominic and his partner live on a small acreage property, where they have two horses, two dogs and a cat. “It’s a bush block that we’re slowly working to improve.”
He is also a self-described ‘one-eyed Sydney Swans supporter’.
