Staff Profile - Kelly Pearce
Meet Kelly Pearce - Estimator, Qld
Kelly Pearce’s first experience of the construction industry was when she was 16.
“I decided to give waterproofing a go by working for my Dad’s company during the school holidays. I immediately loved the atmosphere. I enjoyed being onsite and the fact that the work environment was constantly changing.”
Kelly went onto working full-time as an apprentice water-proofer.
“I worked on a mixture of residential and government developments, as well as commercial precincts with contract values over $600K. Some of these projects included Suncorp Stadium, Sunshine Coast University Hospital, Gold Coast University Hospital, Commonwealth Games Village, Aged Care facilities and numerous other multi-level residential developments.”
While completing her apprenticeship, Kelly studied a Cert III in Waterproofing and a course in ISO 9001 – Quality Management and System Certification and Workplace Health & Safety. Her studies helped develop her knowledge and equip her for future roles.
“At the age of 19, I was promoted to the position of Contracts and Tender Administrator and Workplace Health and Safety Advisor. This diverse role involved a mixture of reading and interpreting tender documents and drawings, conducting take-offs and creating accurate Contract Estimates, Procurement and ongoing Contract Administration for all current projects.
“I created and monitored all site-specific safety documentation and procedures for each project. This helped ensure our company and our employees adhered to health and safety regulations, legislation policies and procedures.”
Keen to pursue further studies, Kelly undertook a Diploma of Building and Construction. This helped further develop her knowledge of the construction industry.
“My role as a water-proofer has exposed me to every stage of a development – from below grade waterproofing to installation at the finishing stages of projects.”
Kelly’s career continued to progress once she joined Advanced
Kelly joined Advanced Buildings in November 2017. Her first role involved coordination of job registrations and scheduling of all Estimators. She was then promoted to Purchasing and Compliance Officer.
“I now work as an Estimator based in Advanced Buildings’ Brisbane office. I conduct onsite inspections, gathering enough information to create detailed scope and cost estimates and provide thorough project reports.”
Kelly’s biggest challenge is to appreciate how far she’s come - and not to be too hard on herself.
“I’ve always had high expectations and standards, both in my personal and professional life. I’m constantly looking to improve my skills and knowledge. I’m learning to recognise my true worth and value within our team and look towards my mentors and peers for grounding when challenges arise that may be out of my control.”
“Advanced Buildings has offered me so much support and growth to become whatever I aspire to be. My mentors and colleagues have seen my sheer determination and continue to support me as I progress in my career.”
During her time with the company, Kelly has been involved in many interesting and challenging projects.
“I think the most interesting project was when I was working as Compliance Officer. I helped create clear, concise systems and processes which streamlined the department and helped mitigate risks for Advanced Buildings.
“I was instrumental in ensuring all trades working for us have up-to-date and relevant information on file. This enabled us to monitor and manage all compliance issues, from licensing and insurance to OH & S requirements and taxation.
While work and study play a big part in Kelly’s life, her proudest achievement is her son.
“Motherhood is all about discovering strengths you didn’t even realise you had. It’s about having the power to deal with fears you didn’t know existed. I don’t want my son to follow in my footsteps. I want him to take the path next to me and go further than I have ever dreamt possible.”
Kelly is keen to continue learning and is planning to undertake a Project Management Diploma in the near future.
High on her bucket list is to travel with her son for his 10th Birthday.
When not at work, she keeps busy.
“I’m actually a rather accomplished cake decorator, though I don’t eat a lot of cake myself. I love netball and watching home improvement shows. I also love playing out in the backyard with my insanely energetic Husky x Border Collie – Duke.”
